One on one counseling sessions are vitally important to our treatment process. We’re sincerely interested in the hopes and concerns of our patients. It’s during our counseling sessions that we can best learn how to affect our patient’s lives. Our perceptions, or “conscious mind” as most would call it, affect much of how we behave and how we feel.
Our counseling sessions are our opportunities to discover and teach methods to positively change behavior. Our patients often learn time management, personal communication skills, and other methods for making conscious choices about changing life for the better.
Sessions are also opportunities for us to listen. Since we use a holistic, integrative approach it is important for us to review how other therapies and treatments are working together.
Family Involvement
We make sure to involve any family possible in the treatment process. More like family meetings, these sessions are chances to talk about progress, challenges, and other issues in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Our families are important parts of our environments and their involvement in the progress of therapy is critical and beneficial.
TYPES OF COUNSELING SERVICES
Psychodynamic Therapy
This is traditional therapy as most people think about it. It is the modern version of the basic Freudian model. We help our patients discover and understand themselves better, while taking into account what we learn through our other evaluations.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This is another type of researched-based psychotherapy focused on modifying thoughts, perceptions and behaviors. We use it to treat specific disorders such as depression, anxiety, panic and others. In many cases CBT has better effects with adolescents when compared to medication.
Mindfulness-based therapy (MBCT)
This type of cognitive therapy teaches being present in the moment. We help patients identify their thoughts and feelings without judging them. MBCT is most effective in mental and emotional trauma and anxiety based disorders. It incorporates meditation, visualization, breathing exercises, and learning to recognize emotional state moment to moment.
Organizational/Time Management
More than encouraging our patients to keep a planner, we teach organizational skills best suited for each patient. Our goals are balance, prioritizing ,and playing on strengths already present within natural energy cycles.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
We use EDMR mostly to help with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) or simply highly distressful incidents in a patient’s life. The theory behind the therapy proposes that incidents not fully dealt with will exhibit themselves in unhealthy ways. We use this type of therapy to recalibrate memories in the brain. It involves engaging multiple senses at once using eye movements, sounds, and tactile stimulation.
